You can when you dumpster dive.

Dumpster diving is looking inside, or going inside, a dumpster, and finding useful things, food, and merchandise.

How do you start dumpster diving? What do you need? Is it legal?

How you start dumpster diving
You start dumpster diving by visiting dumpsters behind grocery stores or retail stores.

Lift the lid. See what is inside. If it’s useful, take it.

What do you need?
Essential gear for dumpster diving includes:

1. a reliable flashlight in order to see what’s inside the dumpster or compactor
2. some milk crates, so you can stand on them to look inside the dumpster, then use them to store items
3. durable clothing, shoes, long pants, socks, long sleeved shirt, jacket
4. a medical kit or just bring a carrying case with cotton swabs, hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol, band aids in case of emergency

Is it legal?
Yes, dumpster diving is legal. My friend Scott called the police and asked them and they said it was legal. If there are no trespassing signs posted on the dumpster, that means stay away. Exercise caution and wisdom when dumpster diving. Bring a friend or two as dive buddies. It’s always good to have a support system.

Once you start dumpster diving, your entire view of paying for food will likely change, because you’re probably going to find a lot of food and other items in the dumpster.

Although you might be skeptical due to rumors, I’m here to tell you that dumpster diving is a fun way to save money, recycle, and avoid the hassle of standing in line at the checkout counter.

yield: found lots of meat, bologna, turkey, ham – so much meat it did not fit in the fridge, and even if it did, it would require many people to eat. i shared it with neighbor Al and my Mom
note: go at night and bring a flashlight. be prepared for the cats that might jump out, so make some noises while approaching dumpster. bring flashlight, dumpster stick, durable clothes. you might meet a friendly homeless person.

I think the food in these pictures came from 2 different locations–the Sedano’s dumpster and the Winn Dixie compactor. A terrific yield. Praise God.

yield: sometimes has lots of food, including yogurt, dairy, meats, cheeses, vegetables. go a few times a week to get a feel for the schedule. avoid daytime hours. i was asked to leave once. i did.

yield: one afternoon, I saw a guy retrieving Carvel cakes from this compactor. he put some on his bicycle and rode off. i looked inside and saw about 20 carvel cakes, melting. returned with the honda and got most, if not all of them. drove to canew on c street and distro’ed them with, i think, peter.
